ISS .3ds Model

Postby max » Mon Dec 29, 2014 3:46 pm

Does anyone have a .3ds model of the current configuration of the ISS that works in GMAT? I've been trying to use this model:
Unfortunately, it causes GMAT to stop working (Error Message: "GMAT.exe has stopped working"). Before it does this, it prints to the console: "Material anisotropic1SG not found!"

I am able to import the model in 3DS Max and it opens just fine. The surface material also looks fine when I rotate the model. I was able to export the file as a new .3ds which does work (partially) in GMAT, but the solar panels are now missing. This is turning into a big time sink. Can anyone help?

If possible and if the basic model above can't be resolved, I'd really like a much higher fidelity model such as this:
I can open the scene in Lightwave and I've attempted to export it as a .fbx file (you can't export as a .3ds). Then I was able to import the .fbx file in 3DS Max (it looks fine in Max) so that I could then export as a .3ds file. No luck with the export. Lots of warning messages that I won't reproduce here.

Thoughts? Models to share? Bueller?

Hello GMAT User,

This is currently a known bug in GMAT. Some .3ds models load just fine (with the 3D model and texture maps showing up in OrbitView graphics), while other .3ds models' 3d model and texture maps do not show up complete in the graphics. You have found a case of a.3ds model (isscombined.3ds) that is causing GMAT to crash the moment when we load this model into GMAT. I see this behavior on my end as well.

This bug is documented in our bug tracking system, JIRA. Check out GMT-4898 ( and GMT-3712 ( After creating an account in JIRA, you can choose to follow the work progress on these bugs by adding yourself under 'Watchers' list ('Watchers list if under People).

I have found an ISS model that shows up completely in R2011a. Attached is ISS model's zip file.

1. Please download R2011a executable from sourceforge: ... AT-R2011a/

2. Then load the attached ISS model using R2011a GMAT.

3. Attached are also screenshots of how ISS looks like in OrbitView graphics and Spacecraft Resource's Visualization panel after I loaded attached ISS .3ds model into R2011a. You should make the Scale to be 1000.

4. We fixed some un-related issues on .3ds models and fixing those un-related issues resulted in breakage of .3ds not showing up completely in newer versions of GMAT (R2012a, R2013a and R2014a). If you want to use ISS model for generating trajectory pictures, you can do analysis in latest GMAT R2014a and then draw pictures using the attached ISS model into R2011a. Note if you try to load attached ISS .3ds model into R2012a, R2013a, or R2014a, you'll notice that some parts of the model show up but the texture map files do not show up.

Hope this helps!
